3-4 October 2013 Aalborg University – Aalborg Objectives: By definition, planning is concerned with long term, transformative change. However, the conceptualization of the factors and dynamics leading to this change is often limited. Transition studies can contribute to understanding such factors and dynamics. Transition studies are also becoming increasingly interested in the urban as object and the planning dimensions of transitions. But these studies still lack an adequate conceptualization of the urban and of the role of collective action in it. This conceptualization has long been the focus of spatial planning. In this course we will further explore the potential of an encounter between these two traditions. The course focuses on the analysis and planning dimension of transitions in urban contexts, spatial configurations, and changes in the institutional context of planning including planning tactics, practices and strategies for long term spatial transformative change. The course aims to: • Shape theoretical and practical perspective on transitions useful for the study of urban forms and urban governance in relation to the long term development of urban and spatial policies • Assess the strengths, weaknesses and potentialities of how urban and spatial transitions can be addressed in planning theories, planning research and methods • Highlight the relevant aspects of PhD research projects which have a analytical and planning perspective on transitions in urban and spatial contexts Credits: 5 ECTS (with a paper)/3 ECTS (without a paper) Location: Aalborg University, Aalborg, Skibrogade 5, 9000 Aalborg Activity timeline: Deadline for enrolment: 15th August (max 25 PhD students) Preparatory reading and writing: 15th August – 15th September 2013 Meetings: 3-4 October 2013 (2 full days) Paper: There is the option to send a paper by 15th September 2013.
