How to get to Lisbon

You can reach Lisbon either by airplane, train or car. All terminals are equipped with public transportations, check the Public Transport section for more information on how to move once you’ve arrived at the city.

By Air

You can obtain more information on airlines travelling to Lisbon Airport by clicking here. Participants travelling by air will arrive at Aeroporto Humberto Delgado (LIS)- there is a Metro station at the airport, but you can also take a Taxi.

By Train

You can obtain more information on trains travelling to Lisbon via OMIO. On arrival by train, you can travel throughout the city using the local metro and train lines if needed.

By Car

If you prefer to come by car, there are roads from various points north and south along the border with Spain. The best way to enter Lisbon is via the A1 and A2 highways, which both have national and international connections along their course. You can estimate tolls and gas expenses with Via Michelin.

By Bus

You can check buses coming to Lisbon via OMIO.

Shared Rides

You can also reach Lisbon via carpool, although they’re less frequent and predictable. Check for availability via BlaBlaCar.

It is recommended that you buy a rechargeable ticket (you’ll be able to use it with both services, bus/tram and subway)

Taxis

Taxis are available in abundance in the city center and at train stations, also during the night. If you choose this mode of transportation, make sure the meter is turned on at the beginning of the journey and always ask for a receipt/invoice. If you would like to reserve a taxi for a specific date and time, you can ask for assistance at the Reception of your Hotel. Otherwise, Portugal is also served by Uber and Bolt.

Practical Information

Lisbon is a safe city to visit. Being a large metropolitan center, it carries its own set of usual touristic risks (e.g. pickpocketing), but overall, Portugal’s capital has relatively low crime rates. The city is comfortable for walking, it is well-lit at night and has police presence.

Electricity

Portugal operates on 230 Volts.
Electrical sockets (outlets) types: German style plug Shuko (Type F) and Europlug (Type C) with 2 round pins. It is recommended that participants bring their own electrical/travel plug adaptor.

Payments

Be prepared to pay in cash (Euros – €) as sometimes shops and other services (transport, etc.) do not accept payments with cards or apps.

The conference will be held on the Iscte campus. Iscte is located on the northwest section of Lisbon, near the airport, the Entrecampos rail station, and reachable from the city center by the yellow metro line. See more information in “How to get to Iscte”.

Welcome day: IGOT

There is a gathering and reception on the 23rd of June for everybody including early career cholars and newcomers to the community. It will take place at IGOT, Instituto de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território, situated next to Iscte. The official program will be announced later and it is epected to start around 14:00.
