Short biography

Although I am a principally a historian for several years I have been interested in how a deeper understanding of the past might contribute to debates about and transitions to lower-carbon and more socially equitable forms of transport in the UK and elsewhere. I was the leader of a UK AHRC-funded research network, ‘Mobility Cultures: Making a Usable Past for Transport Policy’ in 2010-12, and am just finishing co-editing a collection of papers aimed at policy-makers and students based on this network’s events. I am currently facilitating a series of workshops on history and transport policy for the UK Department for Transport and the Treasury, and have contributed to a similar initiative in the Netherlands. I should like both to learn from and to help enrich transnational debates about transitions to sustainable forms of living, partly but not only through from a historical perspective
